We all have our set routines. In fact, as much as you may think to the contrary, we even like them. Routines breed efficiency. Routines save time. If you order the same item off the menu each time you eat out, and you like that item, you will normally be satisfied every time you dine out. Now there may be dimished rewards each time (i.e. it will never be as good as the first time), but your needs will be met. Now what would happen if you order something completely different? What if, instead of eating out, you took a cooking class with friends and took turns making dinner for each other? What if, instead of that, you cooked dinner for the homeless once a month?
These items are examples of shifting, something that I've fully embraced over the last few weeks. Has it changed my life? Actually, yes it has. I'm seeing new things, eating different meals (yum), and listening to new music. These experiences will change me ever so slightly to make me more well rounded then I was before and, hopefully, will allow me to go on a make bigger changes that will also have an even greater impact on myself.
Try it for yourself. Read the article then begin looking for items you could shift in your own life. Everything can be changed (i.e. work, clothes, hair, etc) so pick something and shift. (Think of George in the 'Do the Opposite' episide.)
Remember, it's not too late to be what you might have been.
